The
Woermannhaus was designed by architect Höft in 1904 and was
built in 1905/1906. The tower was originally called
"Damara Tower" as the Damara and Namaqua Trading Co.
was the company's name before it was changed to "Woermann
Brock & Co." in 1909.
The tower did not form part of the original plans for
the Woermannhaus. It is said, however, that a
previous water tower was situated at the same spot, which
was used by the captains of the Woermann Line for bearing on
their approach to the landing area. The Captains insisted on
having a new landmark there and so the tower was added to
the original building plans. The additional tower was
then approved in Hamburg, Germany, by the same head office
for both the shipping line and the trading company.
The Woermannhaus was built to accommodate the manager
and his family, and many of the employees of Woermann Brock
& Co., who worked in Swakopmund at that time on a five year
contract , usually young men with a family of there own. The
female members of the staff were accommodated upstairs.
The Woermannhaus was used as residence of General Botha's
Staff officers after the occupation of Swakopmund by South
African forces in 1915. One of the present library
rooms still bears a few rifle shots in the ceiling,
a memento of those times.
After
the end of hostilities in South West Africa, the building
was allocated to the last German Governor, Dr Seitz, who was
interned here until he was repatriated to Germany in 1919.
In 1924, the Woermannhaus was taken over by the SWA
Administration, who converted it into a school hostel and it
was used in this capacity until 1972. During the
period of almost 50 years, several generations of school
children have lived in this building. The tower was usually
allocated to the girls, whereas the boys were accommodated
in the "Ritterburg" across the road. In 1971 the
Woermannhaus was declared a "National Monument"
