LÜDERITZ BAY AND KOLMANSKOP Kolmanskop - an era gone by! This ghost town near Lüderitz is fast being taken over by the Namib desert, and life had moved to Lüderitz.

Angra Pequena - as this small coastal port was first known, a name given by the Portuguese seafarer, Bartholomew Diaz, & later re-named Lüderitzbucht in honour of the merchant/adventurer, Adolf Lüderitz. A quiet, fairy-tale town today, Lüderitz - in conjunction with Kolmanskop - boasts one of the richest chapters in Namibian history. History, not in normal politics or war, but politics & war of a different kind - Diamonds! What more can be said, all over the world and through the years, the mere word "Diamond" created many things for many people - literally & figuratively. In the hot sands of the Namib desert around Lüderitz & Kolmanskop, those things played themselves out in probably the longest running human drama on the most unusual stage. Only Kolmanskop can re-enact it! The few photographs on this page can only hint at the true Lüderitz and Kolmanskop, and they are particularly relevant to those safaris in the Seven Wonders of Namibia collection, that have Lüderitz and Kolmanskop included in the itinerary. With any luck, the wild Feral horses of the southern Namib desert could be encountered en-route to Lüderitz.
