HORSE RIDING TRAIL - THROUGH THE GRANDEUR OF THE
FISH RIVER CANYON

OF NAMIBIA

A 9-day safari, with a 4 day horse trail through the grandeur of the Fish
River Canyon
. Namibia's offer for those with lots of enthusiasm, but little time!

The Southern Plains Trail is a component of the Fish River Canyon to Orange River Trail,
and the same introduction is equally valid.

Namibia’s Southern Planes Trail covers three private parks:  Gondwana Park, Canyon Ranch
and Aussenkehr Park, altogether covering an area of about 200 000 ha. These Parks fall within
the Nama Karoo Desert biome and are on the fringe of the transitional area between Nama
Karoo and Succulent Karoo with the Orange River basin at Aussenkehr being the most arid
part of the Nama Karoo biome.
Aussenkehr Park is also home to a small Namib Feral Horse
population, descended from seventeen horses that were relocated from the original Wild Horse
population at Garub in the Namib Desert, during the 1992 drought.

ITINERARY OVERVIEW

DAY 1

Meet your host at our International airport and transfer to Windhoek for a quick tour of its sights & sounds before settling into a comfortable B&B.

DAY 2

Transfer of about 8 hours including a light lunch pack. Arrive at Canyon Lodge early afternoon for a drink or coffee; meet your fellow-riders on a drive to the main view point of the Fish River Canyon where the normal tourists usually go hiking and sight seeing.  You will be amazed to know where we have been with our horses and listen to the exciting stories of those who have ridden the canyons. Go back to Mountain Camp and be welcomed by hosts, guides, local crew and the horses. Welcome (for you who have just arrived) and goodbye dinner (for those who have done Namibia´s Southern Canyons Trail)  - happy chats around the campfire under the African sky.

DAY 3

Parallel to the course of the Fish River Canyon from Mountain Camp to Fourie se Gat (‘a hole dug by Mr. Fourie’). Over wide open savannah with game and hills in the east and the awesome sight of the canyon area to the west. Usually you can enjoy a spectacular sunset  over the Fish River Canyon's ‘bad lands’ to the west, the Granite kopjes behind you and the sandy planes of  the Gamkab basin ahead of you with Norotshama peak on the southern horizon.

DAY 4

Fourie se Gat to Gamkab Camp. As we ride towards the Orange River basin, riding speed increases over wide open planes. Unlimited space, ever changing scenery and camp at a cosy spot next to the Gamkab River.

Day 5

From Gamkab Camp to Inaub river camp. Riding over a patch of isolated sand dunes onto Aussenkehr plains to the magnificent view of a table mountain. Then further on crossing the plains, looking for the feral horses. Again, riding is not limited to a specific route, as we can roam freely in a vast environment. Camp at Inaub River where the feral horses come to drink.

DAY 6

The last ride. Stunning contrast again; ride from the wide open plains into the very narrow Aussenkehr canyon onto a surprising view point, displaying the Orange/Gariep River with its vineyards in an otherwise barren landscape. Another happy canter and some strolling through the vineyards to finally untack at Norotshama Lodge on the banks of the Orange River.  Go for a swim in the pool (or river) and enjoy a happy goodbye dinner at the lodge, while the horses are transported by truck to Holoog or Klein Aus Vista.

DAY 7

After a late breakfast at Norotshama, drive to Klein Aus Vista; light lunch, afternoon/sunset drive to the Wild Horses.

DAY 8

Leave early this morning to drive to Windhoek. Arrive in time to settle into a 3-star Hotel to freshen up, relax and gradually be re-introduced to civilization before dinner.

DAY 9

Subject to flight departure time, you may have all morning to browse the central business district of Windhoek with its coffee shops and street markets. Transfer to the airport to arrive in time for your  departure flight.
