Wildlife
Wonderland
A Visit to Namibia's
Game-rich North
Improved 16 day itinerary! |

|

GENERAL OVERVIEW
| Although Namibia
is best known as "the Country between two Deserts", we are not in
any way
restricted to only desert environment. In fact, this 16-day, 15-night safari will
prove just
that! Most of the safari will be spent in the watery, riverine forest regions
of Kavango and Caprivi. The safari will start
at Namibia's International airport and end there again 16 days later. Eleven
nights spent from the Kavango River to the Kwando- and the Zambezi Rivers
- with two on a small, rustic but comfortable houseboat - while
most Game viewing will be
done from a river boat, rather than a 4X4 vehicle. Experience sunsets
that dwell
in your memory
forever! 1 Night before reaching the water wonderland, and 2 after returning to the more arid regions of Namibia, will
also be at venues offering wildlife viewing - each boasting their
own, unique species. The first night in Windhoek to relax from the flight and
acclimatize to Namibia. |
ITINERARY
OVERVIEW
|
DAY-TO-DAY |
ACCOMMODATION
/ ACTIVITY |
| DAY
1: |
Meet
your host at Namibia's International airport. Transfer to a comfortable
bed & breakfast in Windhoek. Relax from
the long flight and acclimatize to Namibia. |
| DAY
2: |
After
breakfast, a relatively long haul, but all on tarred road, towards a
rustic rest camp en-route to the water wonderland of Kavango/Caprivi.
After freshening up, short, unguided walks on the premises could result in
wildlife sightings of, from the largest antelope in the world - the Eland - to the
smallest antelope in Namibia - the diminutive Damara Dik-dik. |
| DAY
3: |
Your
first view of the Kavango River this afternoon as you pass through the
northern town of Rundu. End the day with your first sunset cruise on the
Kavango River before dinner. |
DAY
4
and
DAY 5: |
To
make travelling easier, and have more time out of the safari vehicle, the
over 500 km journey from Rundu in the western Kavango, to Katima Mulilo in
the eastern Caprivi, will be done in two overnight stops at a venue
situated on the banks of the Kwando River. During the breeding season, the
vertical banks of this river is coloured crimson with myriad Carmine
Bee-eaters. Experience the Kwando on another sunset cruise. On your second
day, a rewarding wildlife viewing drive through a Game
Reserve and, should you feel up to it, end your day on the river again,
cruising languidly under giant Jackalberry- & Mangosteen trees, alive with
Chacma baboons & Vervet Monkeys. |
DAY
6
to
DAY 8: |
A leisurely breakfast before continuing into the eastern Caprivi and the
Zambezi River - a few kilometres upstream of Dr Livingstone's Victoria
Falls. The first night in a a rustic, en-suite chalet to acquaint yourself
with your new environment - and an early night. Be woken very early on the
second day to board a small houseboat - savour the early-morning mood of
the river while enjoying breakfast on board, where you will spend the next
two nights, cruising along the Zambezi River, studded with wildlife
on the river banks to either side. |
DAY
9
and
DAY 10: |
Arriving back on shore this morning, disembark after breakfast for a quick
freshening-up before returning to a different venue than before on the
banks of the Kwando River. Two nights to make your own comparisons between
the Zambezi- and the Kwando Rivers' environments on a Game drive
and river boat cruises - starting with a sundowners cruise on your first
day here. |
DAY
11
and
DAY 12: |
Due to the
long distance you have come from Windhoek, this is the turnaround point
and you start your journey back towards Windhoek. Arriving back on the
boundary between eastern Kavango and western Caprivi, the next two nights
will be on the banks of the Kavango River, at one of the last bends in the
river before it empties itself out into the famous Okavango Delta in
Botswana. A wildlife viewing drive through
the uncommercial-ised, & seldom visited, Mahangu Game Reserve
is included. A
Reserve well-known for its aquatic bird life and the stately Sable
antelope. Further cruises along the
Kavango River and a visit to the Popa Falls - a rapids section of the
river - is also included. |
| DAY
13: |
Instead of
departing from this water- and wildlife wonderland today, succumb to
temptation and spend a last night along the river near Rundu. Be welcomed
here by traditional song and dance, performed by the staff of this small
guest lodge. |
| DAY
14: |
Leaving behind the water wonderland of the past few days, the return
journey will again be done with a night-stop to shorten the long hours in a
safari vehicle. Tonight, at a small mountain lodge, will offer the
opportunity for a night drive, to seek out the nocturnal bush wildlife of Namibia. |
| DAY
15: |
Unfortunately, even
good dreams must come to an end, and today you have to return on
the final drive to Windhoek. But, we will not "remove" you from the
wilderness and simply "dump" you back into civilization.
Accommodation tonight will be at a small, quiet Game Lodge en-route
to the airport. Should you so wish, join a sundowners drive to savour your
final view of our sunset on this, your last night in Namibia, Africa. |
| DAY
16: |
Subject to flight
departure time, you may have all morning to enjoy nature walks, finish
those last exposures / memory disc space, or simply laze on a pool chair,
viewing wildlife at the waterhole. Transfer to Namibia's
International airport to arrive in time for your departure flight. |
